Week Three!!

Hello everyone, Paul and Jackie here from the Resource Centre for Persons with Disabilities.  We are coming to the end of week three here in Tamale and we have made lots of progress and excited about what we will be doing in the coming weeks!

This week, we have had another week in the office preparing for interactions with schools and communities.

Lukman and Ed are still busy working on the documentary that we hope to be able to screen soon.

Hanifa and Richard have been writing letters to schools and radios asking to schedule times for us to go and do our sensitisation presentation. Today we found out that Northern Star School have granted us permission to go ahead with our presentation on Wednesday. We are all really looking forward to Cohort 7’s first school visit!

Paul has been working on hand-outs for the schools we will visit and follow up presentations as we hope to visit all the schools at least twice to really tackle stigma about persons with disabilities.

Jackie has been working with Fraser to find Para-sports equipment donations. They have been targeting companies that have large give-aways for charities and local connections they have with former schools, etc. back in the UK.

At this point in our blog we would like to thank our wonderful Team Leaders Jonny and Bawa for their support and confidence that has made the take-off of our cohort so exciting – we are very lucky here at the Resource Centre!

We have had two main highlights this week that as a whole group we have really enjoyed! The first would have to be the screening of the amazing film Emmanuel’s Gift – this is an amazing film about a young, physically disabled Ghanaian man who decides to cycle the length of Ghana to combat Stigma that follows persons with disabilities all around Ghana. It’s an amazing film that we would recommend to anyone! Especially future volunteers coming to the Resource Centre.

The second was our participation on the UN’s campaign #Action2015! We have been looking at the Millennium Development Goals and choosing the one we are the most passionate about. We are posting our choices on Twitter and Facebook – we will be releasing our pictures of the period of our Cohort so keep an eye out on our Twitter and Facebook page for updates!

We are sure that our Saturday morning playing Wheelchair Basketball will be another highlight that other members of our team can tell you about next week!

Thanks for taking the time to read our blog – we are having so much fun out here – making new friends, developing new skills and getting to know each other’s culture! Keep up the good work Resource Centre!! Over and out – Paul and Jackie!
